In 1865, ten year old orphan Lizzy is living in a New York City orphanage. When a wealthy couple from the south visits the orphanage looking to adopt a child, Lizzy is immediately taken with them. However, she soon learns that the couple is only interested in adopting a white child. Undeterred, Lizzy comes up with a plan to win over the couple and convince them to adopt her. With the help of her friends at the orphanage, Lizzy sets out to make her dream of finding a family come true.
